Mary was born in San Francisco on November 12th 1924 to Josephine and Paul Caruana. In 1932, the Great Depression returned her and her family back to their native country of Malta. She and her family survived World War II even after multiple bombings on their small island country. During the war she met her husband Melchio, and they were married in Mary's small hometown village of Mosta, Malta. They returned to San Francisco in 1948, and were married for 55 years. Mary was a devoted, selfless, loving mother and grandmother and always put her family first. She kept busy raising eight children, and continued to be a strong part of their lives well into their adult years. She loved family gatherings and the love and laughter they would bring. If she wasn't with family she could usually be found in the garden where she could grow just about anything or at Catholic mass where religion was such an integral part of her life and family. She was an excellent cook and always made sure her family was well fed. Mary always had a smile on her face and was laughing and enjoying life until her very last days. Mary is survived by her eight children, Martha, Paul, Lawrence, Josephine, Janice, Mary, Michael and Caroline, 22 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and her sister Frances Chetcuti of Millbrae, CA. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Melchio.

She is survived by her beloved son, Ronald Shaheen. Jean attended Commerce High School in San Francisco. Her first job was for Levi Strauss and later she worked for the Federal Government as a clerk-typist at the SF Ferry Building in 1943, when she was 21 years old. During World War II, she worked at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, she also worked in downtown San Francisco at the Office of Naval Research, as a purchasing agent at Treasure Island and at the Naval Supply Center, Oakland Army Base. In 1972, she retired but wasn't done yet! Jean worked in the private sector from 1973 to 1992 when she finally retired for real, after a long-term temp assignment at Arco Oil Co. in San Bruno. For the past 21 years, Jean has been active in The Golden Years Club and NARFE. She enjoyed attending the San Francisco Ballet, musicals and movies with her sisters. In addition to her son, Jean is survived by her brother, Joseph Galea and her sisters, Mary Cross and Barbara Skanderson. She is also survived by a niece and 3 nephews as well as a great-nephew and 3 great-nieces.3
